 Wind energy and wind farms have become a topic of great interest to many in Sumner County. In an effort to provide our citizens with information on this subject the Sumner County Economic Development Commission in conjunction with other agencies has sponsored a series of information events.
March 26, 2008 – South Central Kansas Wind Energy Seminar
The Sumner County Economic Development Commission, Kingman County Economic Development Council, Kingman County Farm Bureau, Sunflower RC&D, and the Kansas Rural Center held a Wind Energy Seminar Wednesday, March 26, 2008. The event drew over 100 people from the area to learn about wind farm development, community wind, transmission lines and interconnections, leasing for landowners, what it takes on the part of elected officials, and coalition building. May 28, 2008 – Wind Farm Tour
Sumner County Economic Development Commission and Sumner County Farm Bureau sponsored a Wind Farm Tour to the Ferrell Ranch in Beaumont, Kansas on May 28, 2008. 39 individuals participated in this event. For more information, please click on the Wind Farm Tour tab on the left of this page.
July 22, 2008 – Wind Leasing Seminar
The Sumner county Economic Development Commission and the Sumner County Farm Bureau co-sponsored a seminar on July 22 on Wind Leasing. The featured speaker for this event was Mike Irvin, Attorney for Kansas Farm Bureau. Also presenting was Terry Miller from Harper County Farm Bureau. Approximately 75 people attended the meeting and it was decided to form a coalition in Sumner County to work on this project with a coordinating committee of volunteers to spearhead the efforts.
August 28, 2008 – Transmission Line Meeting with ITC and KCC – More information will be available shortly on this meeting.
September 9, 2008 - Wind Energy Informational Meeting
A short informational presentation will be provided, followed by discussion and the completion of a survey. The survey will help gauge the level of interest in wind energy development and the next steps in the project.
