Moore Venture Foods is now open in Belle Plaine

The former M&M Market is now open under new management and a new name.  The store is now owned and operated by Moore Venture Foods.  Moore's is a family-owned grocery chain.  They run stores in Medford and Okeene, Oklahoma and Sublette and Caldwell, Kansas. 

Bobby Moore, owner of Moore Venture Foods, says the transition has been seamless.  The store also has a new full-time manager, Kade Hanes.  As well as extended hours.

Conway Springs wins solid waste grant

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Bureau of Waste Mangement recently announced the recipients of the Green Schools grants and the waste tire recycling grants.  The city of Conway Springs was awarded $299.75 to purchase loose rubber mulch for their Central Park.  

There were 43 waste tire recycling grant recipients.  Awards ranged from $300 to $47,617.  These grants are funded through a 25-cent tax paid on the purchase of new tires.   

Sumner County is officially home to the Kansas Wheat Festival

Wellington is now the hose of the Kansas Wheat Festival.  Governor Sam Brownback signed House Bill 2563, making the Wheat Festival the official "Kansas" Wheat Festival.

2012 will mark the 112th Wheat Festival.  This year the festivities will be July 11 through July 15.

Several Sumner County residents made the trop to Topeka April 26th for the ceremonial bill signing with Governor Brownback.  Among those making the trip were Sumner County Economic Development Director Janis Hellard and former board member Marvin White.  Others in attendance were Wellington Chamber of Commerce Director Shelley Hansel-Williams, Kathy Risley, Sherry Wiley, Michelle McHenry, State Representative Vince Wetta, and Carson LeGrand.

National Glass Museum grand opening

The National Depression Glass Association (NDGA) had its grand opening on May 1st.  They are located at 117 North Washington in Wellington.

The organization has been working towards this museum for over twelve years.  The museum has American made glassware from the late 1800's up through the mid-century on display. 

The museum is open from from 11am-4pm each Thursday, Friday, and Saturday or by appointment.
